Old Town Chambers: Fine Luxury Apartments in Historic Edinburgh

The apartments offer a quintessential, authentic experience of staying within the World Heritage Site of the Old Town, combined with the luxurious comforts of a 21st-century lifestyle. Each apartment is distinct and unique with many original features having been retained and incorporated into the contemporary style, including exposed brick work and gabled ceilings.

Situated just off the famous Royal Mile in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Old Town Chambers consists of 50 five-star luxury-serviced apartments. These apartments range from studios to a three bedroom penthouse and 15th century townhouse. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with separate living, dining and sleeping areas. All apartments boast beautiful quality handmade furniture and furnishings, double-smoked French oak wood flooring, Italian tiling and exposed stone walls, alongside the latest Bose entertainment systems and a 24-hour concierge service.

Probably the most striking feature of the Old Town is the density of tightly packed tenements separated by narrow “closes” (alleys) between buildings.  One of the most historic buildings is known as Advocates Close which dates to the 16th century when The Royal Mile was the hub of the City.  It takes its name from Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the last Advocate of Scotland in office during the time of the Restoration, Revolution and Union.  The close has undergone much change through its life and the £46m development which redeveloped the area is one of its most dramatic reinventions.

There are two types of room in Old Town Chambers: Signature and Capital. Signature apartments have been 3-bed-view-of-upstairs-bedroomdesigned to provide unique views across the city.  Capital rooms evoke a cozy, friendly atmosphere, but without a premiere view.

We found our Signature apartment to be the perfect place to experience the character of the Old Town, an apartment that provided the perfect blend of historic and contemporary features.  These serviced apartments should appeal to a wide range of guests, ranging from families, independent travelers and business professionals.  We were grateful that the traditional construction design of the building ensured us of a sound night’s sleep on both nights of our visit.

Finding our lodging was easy.  Conveniently located off the Royal Mile, there is a passageway next to the Real Mary King’s Close attraction.  Walk down a few steps and you’re there.  There’s an Italian restaurant next door to the main entrance of Old Town Chambers with a wide selection of dining options making it easy for take-out, if you do not wish to use your in-room kitchen facilities. Or, would you enjoy breakfast in bed or a just a quiet night in with a catered meal?  Old Town Chambers has proudly partnered with Valvona & Crolla to offer Italian inspired cuisine for a delicious breakfast and dine-in boxes to our guests.  Arrange your meal ahead of time with the concierge for just £29 per box (serves 2).  Go down about 120 steps and you’re at Waverly Station and a stone’s throw from Princes Street.  There are plenty of dining options within walking distance.

In 2011 Old Town Chambers and surrounding developments were formed out of 11 buildings and now occupy a landmark position between Advocate’s Close and Roxburgh’s Close with many apartments providing stunning vistas towards the New Town, The Forth Bridges and Fife.

Opened in July 2013, enormous effort was made during its design and development to respect Edinburgh’s historical surroundings.

A concierge is on site 24/7 and is able to answer any questions.  Rooms are equipped with hairdryers, Cowshed bath amenities, a kitchen fully-stocked with glassware, dishes, silverware, and numerous useful cooking utensils.  There is an oven, range, dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer and Nespresso machine with capsules.  Smart TVs provide a wealth of online content to access.  Apartments have a Bose Speaker fitted to access and enjoy music from your personal collection, accessible from your Bluetooth devices.  Just pair and play.  Other amenities include Free Wi-Fi throughout the building, GHD’s available from reception, Laptop safe, Individually controlled heating, Large baths (in most apartments), Powerful drench showers, Chaise lounges (in many apartments), Desks (in many apartments), and an iron and ironing board.

old-townOld Town Chambers offers several room options. Their Studio Serviced Apartments have been designed to offer comfort and luxury in a compact package. Each apartment offers open plan living, dining, kitchen and sleeping with a luxurious shower room.  The One Bedroom Apartments are perfect for a couple or family with up to 2 children looking for space and comfort. They encompass a large open plan kitchen, dining and living room with a separate bedroom. The One Bedroom Family Apartment, deal for families, is a serviced apartment offering open plan kitchen, dining and living room with a chaise longue. These have a master bedroom and a bed deck.  Large, airy Two Bedroom Apartments have open plan kitchen, dining and living rooms. The master bedroom is ensuite and the second bedroom has a bathroom of its own. Three-Bed Serviced Apartments are large enough for a group of six. Each of the Serviced Apartment Penthouses have balconies or terraces which overlook Princes Street Gardens and over north Edinburgh.  They have been individually designed to the highest standard with the latest in technology. And finally, the Townhouse can trace its roots back to the 15th Century. Spread over three floors, you enter at ground level where the huge master bedroom has a roll top bath in the corner. Its vaulted ceiling can be admired as you lie in the tub or on the Superking bed. It has large stone fireplaces and a quirky, winding staircase leading past heavy velvet drapes to the open plan bathroom with free standing bath tub. Huge shuttered windows look out onto Advocates Close, giving you an idea of how the original occupants might have entered.

Old Town Chambers was named Serviced Apartments of the Year at the Scottish Hotel Awards in 2015 and 2016, along with being awarded the Best Interior Design award at the inaugural Serviced Apartment Awards of 2016.  It’s easy to see why they deserved these awards.  We can’t think of a better place to stay in the heart of Old Town in Edinburgh than these lovely luxury apartments.
