Ljubljana’s Hotel Park: So Urban, So Chic, So Green

Situated in the middle of the urban beat of Slovenia’s capital and steps away from historical sights, Ljubljana’s Hotel Park prides itself in being “The most urban and green hotel in the center of Ljubljana.”  The hotel is positioned in the middle of the green environment of local parks and strives to represent Slovenia’s regional parks by naming each of the 12 floors of the hotel after one of the twelve.

Featuring a total of 329 beds in 185 comfortable rooms, one may choose between standard and superior rooms as well as 2 modern apartments and 6 connected/family rooms.  Our room on the 12th floor had a lovely view from a huge picture window of the castle and the city.  The décor was modern, minimalist, and tasteful.  A shampoo dispenser in the shower eliminates small plastic bottles of hotel shampoo discarded into the trash.  Gentle reminders in the room encourage eco-friendly practices such as turning off the light, TV and AC when leaving the room and minimizing towel laundering when possible.

The hotel is easy to find and located in a quiet area of the city.  Because the hotel is committed to sustainable development, encouraging respect for the environment and connecting with local communities, the mantra “Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle” is one of the hotel’s main guiding principles. Specifically, the hotel takes numerous measures to use fewer energy products.  It tries to reduce consumption of water and cleaning products.  Waste is separated and recycled.  Homemade dishes and drinks are prepared from local produce, with as little food wasted as possible.  No waste soap is generated. Walking, cycling and using public transport are encouraged even among staff as well as guests.  Special benefits are given to those who are owners of electric vehicles.  The hotel uses recycled paper and natural material as much as possible.  A 15% Eco discount is offered to those who arrive by train.  Guests are invited the opportunity to rent an electric vehicle through Avantcar.

A key reason for tourism businesses to care about sustainability is to help protect the unique natural and cultural characteristics of their resort, so it continues to attract tourists in the future. Hotel Park Ljubljana therefore serves local food, provides information on local customs, heritage sites/places of cultural interest, restaurants, or places to buy locally-made goods or souvenirs. Complimentary morning yoga is offered under the trees and guests are invited to spend an afternoon reading in the outdoor library.

Hotel Park supports different kinds of cultural and entertainment events. It hosts a number of internationally acclaimed actors, singers and writers, showing interest in their work, and a willingness to encourage their creativity.  The hotel also supports local projects that are making this world a better place. Through their charity activity “Dobro-Delamo”, they are raising funds for the following projects:  1) Raising funds for new mattresses for children and young people from socially disadvantaged homes; 2) Support of Project Zero waste through Ecologists without Borders; and 3) A beautification project in the local Tabor neighborhood.

Hotel Park Ljubljana is the first hotel in Slovenia to achieve the prestigious Travelife Gold Certification. Travelife is an international certification system, promoting sustainability within the tourism industry. It helps tour operators, hotels and accommodations to manage and monitor their social and environmental impacts, as well as communicate their achievements to customers. It is an easy to use sustainability system which provides members with a practical framework to improve their business.

Travelife provides a range of support to help its members prepare for their independent audit. Hotel and accommodation members whose on-site audit shows they fulfill the requirements of the Travelife sustainability criteria will achieve a Gold award.  They can then feature on the Travelife Collection website and their award can be used in promotion by hoteliers and tour operators, alongside other recognitions such as their star rating.

Travelife for Hotels and Accommodations is the only certification scheme that works in partnership with tour operators, both in the UK and internationally, who use the system to increase sustainability in the industry and communicate achievements to customers.

The hotel features restaurant Park and he Spark bar on the ground floor, serving a variety of delicious dishes made from fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.  Home-made desserts are prepared in the hotel confectionery.  International and traditional Slovenian dishes are served including local Slovenian wines and beer, as well as fresh smoothies.  Breakfast at the hotel restaurant is from 6:30 to 10:00 on weekdays and 7:00-10:00 on weekends and holidays.  The restaurant is open every day from noon until 10 p.m.

Two modern, technologically-equipped conference rooms in the hotel ground floor are available for organizing seminars, conferences, product presentations or other special events. The two conference rooms, Tabor and Park, are both equipped with modern technical equipment. Capacity for the conference rooms is up to 40 participants. Additionally, the hotel offers service for relaxing coffee breaks, as well as various options for lunches and dinners. With their knowledge, experience and kind attitude towards customers, Hotel Park can help prepare a successful event that will satisfy different tastes and needs.

Hotel Park is in the heart of Ljubljana so all tourist attractions on a list are just a few minutes away. Guests may wish to check out Ljubljana’s Old Town; the three bridges on Ljubljanica river; the Open Market; Prešeren square; Town Hall; Ljubljana Castle; and Križanke open air theater.

“Our mission,” says the hotel literature, “is to be the most urban and green hotel in the center of Ljubljana.”  We’d say, “Mission accomplished!”
